“Where are my pants?”
Audiences watching Disney Pixar’s animation “Soul” (director Pete Doctor) doubt their ears. It’s not a dubbing, but he tilts his head saying that he apparently heard Korean.
Korean is correct. Animator Kim Jae-hyung, who participated in the movie, said in a recent video interview, “The idea came up by a friend who works in the story department.” In addition, a Korean signboard named’Hoho Mandu’ appears in a movie set in downtown New York.
According to the integrated computer network of the Film Promotion Committee on the 5th,’Soul’ surpassed 1 million viewers the day before. Until this day, the cumulative number of audiences was 1,05934. It has been 81 days since November 15 last year that new films have exceeded 1 million cumulative audiences.
‘Soul’ starts with Pixar’s fun imagination that souls with their own personalities are born on Earth in’The World Before Born’. ‘Jo’, who became a soul due to an unexpected accident, and ’22’, a soul who does not want to go to the earth, draws a special adventure together.
In particular, this work draws attention to the fact that this work was completed by Disney Pixar employees while working from home. As it is a world-class organization, we asked if there was any problem with communication.
“It’s already been a year since I’ve been working from home. There are times when communication is uncomfortable and not smooth as I work away. But when I make a movie, I work in cooperation with each other so as not to miss the detailed quality.”
It was also thanks to a system that was thoroughly divided into labor. Animator Kim Jae-hyung is in charge of’character animation’. To be precise, it is in charge of making the characters act and move like the actors in the movie.
“In Disney, only people who do this kind of work are called animators. In other departments, there are people in charge of shooting lights or cameras on computer screens. Some people make backgrounds. They work virtually in invisible skeletons.”
Anyone who participates in the project can speak’horizontally’. When asked, “It seems that communication will be active”, animator Kim Jae-hyung said, “The drawback is that it may not be efficient.”
“People who can think at a similar level have already gathered. They give different opinions, but even that is a level that anyone who is selected for Pixar can express opinions responsibly. So, I try not to listen to any one of them. It is important. Instead, the decision is made by the director.”
‘Soul’ attracted a lot of attention from the production stage with the first black character in Pixar animation. In addition, the fact that a man in his mid forties is the main character and that he already has his own job and is a person who is trying to make his job a reality is reflected by director Peter Dr. The director once said that 23 years ago, he had been thinking of ideas from the moment his son was born.
“When animators start working, they need to know the director’s intentions. I talked about my son whenever I had a chance. My son is similar to him, but he said he resembles his wife. It seems like a lot of such journeys are reflected. After all, the most important thing is family. It contains the director’s thoughts.”
Since there are no theaters at all in the US,’Soul’ was released through a streaming service on its OTT platform, Disney Plus. Colleagues, who have been working hard for many years in anticipation of the theater opening, said they were disappointed. However, it is encouraging that a family who’zipcock’ due to Corona 19 gathered together and shared their feelings while watching’Soul’.
“When I saw that I was healed a lot during a difficult time, I said,’My work might help people this way.’ The frustrations that I feel when the desired results are not produced are similar in any field. But, he said that this job was more than average and enjoyed. I can speak with confidence.”
