“A double lift to finally be closer” – Chronicle

The mayor and the maiden voyage (Gasperini)

Two ‘souls’ always a bit divided. Climbing from the lower historic center of Castelfiorentino to the upper part, but also making the journey in reverse, has never been easy. Stairs and uphill streets have never made the operation easy, especially for a certain type of user (people with disabilities, elderly people, parents with pushchairs). Something has changed since yesterday. The double panoramic lift came into operation by sewing the ‘tear’ between piazza Gramsci and piazza Stanze workers. At the inauguration of the infrastructure there were some citizens in wheelchairs, representatives of the associations “Senza Barriere”, the Spi Cgil and Auser, together with the mayor Alessio Falorni, the council and the president of the urban planning commission, Federico Fioravanti.

Financed for over 50% by the contributions found by the municipal administration through the “Bando suburbs” (cost about 450,000 euros) as part of the “ComUnico” project, the two glass and steel elevators are connected by a short pedestrian section. They allow three intermediate stops: a first lift reaches the “Grande Leccio” square, where there is the entrance to the Ridotto of the Teatro del Popolo; from here, through a short tunnel, you enter the second lift, which has an intermediate stop on via XX Settembre, and another at the Giardini ex-arena, and then go straight up to Piazza Stanze Operaie, where there is a parking lot .

In addition to being functional, the work offers the opportunity to admire unprecedented panoramic views of the main square that are particularly suggestive, especially at night, also due to the effect of a led and strip-led lighting system. The construction of the two lifts was accompanied by a redevelopment that involved Piazza delle Stanze workers and the Gardens of the former arena. The use of the elevators is free. They will be open from Monday to Sunday, from 5.30 to 20.30, and the entire area will be manned by a new video surveillance system for day and night security. “This work – said Falorni during the cutting of the ribbon – enhances an entire area by finally making the Ridotto del Teatro, via XX Settembre, the Gardens of the former Arena and Piazza delle Stanze operaie, the entrance ‘door’, accessible to all to the upper historic center, where the library and the Town Hall are located. In 4 years we have completed the ‘ComUnico’ project. The largest investment made in this part of the country in the modern era “.
