Kölnmesse has announced that gamescom will take place in a hybrid form this year. While a large part of the fair will take place digitally, as last year, this year they would like to receive visitors on site in Cologne through a hygiene concept.

As the fair writes, the opportunity to try out the latest games on site is an integral part of gamescom. That’s why gamescom will be in 2021 organize hybrid and open the entertainment area of the fair to a smaller number of visitors than usual. The fair is scheduled to take place from August 25th to 29th.

In order to avoid long queues in front of the games, one would like to use a completely digital queuing system to control the number of visitors. Otherwise, as in previous years, there will be an event area for eSports and cosplay competitions, while the business area will be enlarged in order to offer trade visitors the best conditions for networking, taking into account the current conditions. For this you have the hygiene concept #B-SAFE4business designed.

The digital part of the fair is to be expanded further compared to the previous year. The aim is to create a central meeting point on the Internet for gaming fans from all over the world. The gamescom event Opening Night Live, which was already known from last year, will return this year and again hosted by Geoff Keighley.

The planning of gamescom is moving in a completely different direction than that of E3. As was recently reported, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the fair in Los Angeles will take place entirely digitally this year, while the venue, the LA Convention Center, will only be used to record live streams.

Whether a major event like gamescom should actually take place during a pandemic is debatable. Regardless of this, time will have to tell whether gamescom can actually take place in Cologne this summer, as is currently planned. If we have learned something from the pandemic last year, it is that long-term planning in particular is difficult and the situation can change again at any time, as the current situation shows.
