Zhao Yixiang, head of the political group of the US representative office, stepped down from public office this week and bid farewell to Washington. In the past year, Taiwan’s mask diplomacy has been recognized internationally. Zhao Yixiang played an intermediary role in assisting the cooperation between Taiwan and the United States on the epidemic.
U.S. Senators Ladda Tammy Duckworth, Daniel Scott Sullivan, and Christopher Andrew Coons visited Taiwan recently and announced that the U.S. will donate 750,000 doses of COVID-19 to Taiwan. )vaccine. Sullivan said at the time that at the beginning of the epidemic, Taiwan had provided more than 10 million masks from the United States. The announcement of aid to Taiwan during this trip was the love and return from the United States.
What many people don’t know is that in Taiwan’s internationally recognized mask diplomacy, Zhao Yixiang has also played a role in it, including direct calls with officials of the White House National Security Council.
It is understood that at the beginning of the outbreak last year, the US government was very interested in Taiwan’s epidemic prevention experience. White House National Security Council officials hoped to obtain more relevant information on Taiwan’s anti-epidemic performance of masks and inquired about the possibility of masks being sent to the United States. Later, senior government officials held a video conference with Matthew Pottinger, the then Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States, to facilitate the subsequent mask diplomacy.
Zhao Yixiang said through Facebook that he was honored to coordinate political work with the United States in the past two and a half years and achieve concrete progress. He also thanked his colleagues in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, American counterparts, and all good friends for their support and blessings. In the future, he will continue to work hard to speak for Taiwan on an international platform.
Counting the past few years, Zhao Yixiang said that from the transit of President Tsai Ing-wen, the name change of the North American Affairs Coordinating Committee, high-level exchanges, to the visit of US cabinet members to Taiwan, etc., the steady growth of Taiwan-US relations has been demonstrated. After the election of the U.S. Democratic government, the Biden team even invited the representative of the United States, Xiao Meiqin, to attend the inauguration ceremony, dispatched cronies to visit Taiwan, and recently announced the donation of vaccines to Taiwan and the trade process. The United States’ support for Taiwan has become a mainstream consensus, and it is believed that more positive developments will be seen in the future.
He also revealed that what he looks forward to most in Washington is the standards for Taiwan-US exchanges. With the joint support of the Trump and Biden administrations, this originally restrictive document became an encouraging document, emphasizing that the United States should comprehensively promote exchanges with Taiwan. After the U.S. rules on exchanges with Taiwan were adjusted in April this year, he invited him and his colleagues to the State Department for meetings at the counterpart of the State Department, making him the first Taiwanese government official to enter the State Department after the new rules on exchanges.
Regarding media reports that he will be involved in the election, Zhao Yixiang said, “I haven’t made any specific plans in this regard.” At this stage, he will use his accumulated experience in the United States to speak for Taiwan on international platforms. Now that Taiwan is facing a severe epidemic, it has demonstrated the importance of international work. To overcome the difficulties of the epidemic together with friendly Taiwan countries, this will be his priority in the next stage.
