Kim writes and designs manga and fantasy stories: ‘With a Nieuwegein touch’

Kim Houtzager (37) lives in Nieuwegein, but is regularly on a different, magical planet. “I used to spend hours browsing comics in the library. Now I write and draw my own manga and fantasy stories, with a Nieuwegein touch. ”

“When I was younger, anime and manga were not at all in the picture in the Netherlands ”, Kim starts off. That changed with the advent of the internet. “I discovered Pokémon when I was sixteen. I wanted to draw the figures, but the result was still not much. ” Online she found several lessons in which coloring techniques were explained picture by picture. YouTube tutorials weren’t there yet ”, laughs Kim. Although she does not prefer it now. ”Teachers often go into the movies too quickly. Just give me a picture. ”

Japanese mishmash

In her studio near Cityplaza, Kim now teaches manga and fantasy drawing workshops. “In small groups, for beginners and draughtsmen who are a bit further.” She would describe her own style as ‘a mixture’: ”With many influences from Japan, that is reflected in my use of color. I get a lot of inspiration from anime; the Japanese cartoons. Not to be confused with manga, because those are the comics. ”

Comic in Nieuwegein newspaper

Kim invents and designs one every week digital strip for pen.nl. “In this I incorporate what I experience and daily life in Nieuwegein.” Although she prefers drawing with pen and pencil, ‘then I can feel the material’, digital design also has its advantages. So I can manage my artwork easier to order for sale, and print my designs on mugs, mouth masks, pillowcases, you name it. ” Her father is happy to help in Kim’s business. “He is my business partner and knows a lot about printing products.”

Self-published books

Kim sells her drawings and (comic) books in her webshop, at fairs and conventions such as Elfia and Dutch Comic Con. I have next to a book with my artwork, also published comic and children’s books. I’ve always loved to write, but it was never my goal to publish a book. ” The story of her childhood book takes place on another planet where magic reigns. When her book was reprinted, Kim did delete and adjust a number of drawings. “I hope I have gotten better now,” she laughs. We love your work, Kim!
