Twenty years ago, The Lord of the Rings: The Companions, the first part of a fantasy trilogy that would forever shape the cinema. On this occasion, the counterpart to Peter Jackson’s trilogy is to appear.
The fantasy epic “The Lord of the Rings” is back in trend. Because not only is a gigantic Amazon Prime Video series with a budget of almost half a billion US dollars only to be released for the first season, another film is also currently being planned. The Warner Bros. film studio recently announced that they are planning an animated film called “Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim” that will show how Middle-earth became what fans know from the Peter Jackson trilogy.
“The War Of Rohirrim” will take place around 250 years before the cinema trilogy. The focus is on King Rohirrim and his fortress Helms Klamm. This will be the scene of one of the most important battles in Middle-earth, which is said to have a strong influence on the continent even centuries later. The animation series is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is best known for the cult anime “Akira”, but also for newer works such as “Ultraman”. The fact that Kamiyama is acting as the showrunner indicates that the new animated film will also be produced in an anime style.
There is a high probability that “Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim” will start on Warner’s streaming service HBO Max. Anime traditionally doesn’t do too well in the international cinema business. In Germany the film might then be available via Sky Ticket, the two companies have already worked together several times in the past. It is not yet clear when exactly the animated film will be released; we may first see the live action series from Amazon. This should appear at the end of 2021.
