It appears that the advent of streaming has led to an unexpected resurgence of animated spin-offs of live action series, with Netflix using the animated route to fill in the gaps left by these pesky live action series and movies that take so much time and money. . The latest addition to this group is Shiny, the severely mutilated Will Smith and Joel Edgerton vehicle which was directed by David Ayer and had a sequel lit green in 2018, but while that hasn’t materialized yet we get an animated adventure called Brilliant: samurai soul, which features Marvel’s vocal talent Shang-Chi star, Simu Liu.
The trailer for Brilliant: samurai soul announces a release date of October 12 for the release of the anime directed by Kyohei Ishiguro which sees Liu playing Izou, a samurai with one eye that enlists the help of Raiden, an orc and an elf who possesses a magic wand that could change the world. Although still animated, the film is listed as using a new style of animation that “merges the characteristics of Japanese printmaking art with 3DGC technology”.
The trailer appears to be working at a level that assumes those watching have seen Shiny and knowing something about the universe he’s in, which involves humans and magical creatures co-insisting on the world. The original film contained in its fantastic effects a story that said a lot about the real world and how different groups of people are treated differently based on background and appearance. It would be surprising if this were so evident in the new film.
While Luminous 2 has been in the doldrums for a few years now, plagued by issues such as Ayer’s loss as director, Will Smith being mostly unavailable due to his schedule, a new screenwriter was recruited and last year Louis Leterrier signed on to direct and Smith and Edgerton would be on board, but so far there has been nothing other heard. However, you would expect that if there was an effort by Netflix to keep Shiny in the minds of the public with this new animated film, surely there is a reason behind it. So we could still see that live-action sequel happen somewhere down the line.
The official summary of Brilliant: samurai soul reads: “Between the fall of the shogunate and the advent of the Meiji era, a powerful brilliant light emitted from a wand ends the long period of the shogunate to prevent further bloodshed as Japan begins to move towards a new era. Amid these circumstances, a one-eyed wandering ronin named Izou, who has lost his reason for living, and Raiden, an orc who hates murder and hopes to leave behind a life of theft, separately meet a young elf girl named Sonya around the Even Together, they set off on a journey along the Tokaido Road to bring her and the wand she holds safely to the land of the northern elves. In their path stands the mysterious Inferni organization, which aims to obtain the wand and revive the Dark Lord, who intends to rule over all of creation. Inferni also uses the new Meiji government in its attempt to steal the wand of Izou, Raiden, and Sonya. Traveling along the Tokaido Road from Kyoto to Yokohama, Izou and Raiden begin their journey to protect the wand. “
