The consumption of souls has doubled in the last 4 years, but …

Alejandro Rojas, director of applied analysis at the Parrot Analytics, a market research company, said in an interview with Variety that the consumption of souls globally has “almost doubled since 2017”.

All this while the anime industry fails to keep up with consumer demand and respond with an adequate offer. According to Parrot, in fact, in the period between May 2020 and April 2021, 4.7% of the demand from viewers concerned anime, while only 3.2% of the productions fell into this category and consequently to be satisfied.

The data also indicated that in the United States the leading company for animation is Hulu. In the second quarter of 2021, the US platform recorded a share of 21.4% of the total viewing time, closely followed by Netflix with 18%, further away Disney+ with 4.6%, and finally Crunchyroll e Funimation respectively with 3.5% and 2.7%.

Rojas he also commented on the acquisition of Crunchyroll from Sony, stating that the agreement reached between the parties would be a victory for the Japanese giant if the latter managed to attract an ever-increasing number of subscribers. However, it is the occasional and general public, and not the most loyal one, that drives the industry, especially thanks to platforms such as HBO Max e Netflix that by offering anime as part of a larger catalog, they are able to capitalize on growth expectations.

According to the financial research firm’s 2019 report Teikoku Databank on the anime industry, the production of the latter may not be able to keep up with the demand from the public, despite the many investments from abroad. At present, it is likely that production will see tight deadlines and a corresponding decrease in productivity, with a consequent decrease in revenues in the long term. And further adjustments are likely to arrive in the future to improve the working conditions of animators, thus revealing the tendency of Japanese medium-sized companies to reduce too much work, but all offset by the costs of implementing this change.
