The popularity of animations using games…New production news continued

Animated series utilizing game IP (intellectual property) are appearing one after another. In particular, game-based animations that have emerged recently are recognized not only as a means of publicity, but also in terms of workability, and are playing their role well, such as pulling the game’s ranking chart backwards.

arcane

One of the representative animation works using game IP is the ‘League of Legends’ based animation series ‘Arcane’ presented by Riot Games. ‘Arcane’ is an animated series that was released in November 21st, and it surpassed ‘Squid Game’, which dominated the global market at the time of its release, in one day and ranked first in the number of viewers on Netflix.

‘Arcane’ depicts the birth and tragedy of the game characters ‘Jinx’ and ‘Bai’ with the background of the wealthy city ‘Piltover’ and the underground city ‘Zaun’ that appear in the original game. Immediately after its release, it received the best evaluation in various fields such as drawing, story, and voice acting.

The award history is also impressive. At the 2022 Annie Awards, it swept 9 categories including the ‘Best Picture in Animation TV/Broadcasting Category’. In addition, it received the ‘Best Award in the Animation Program Category’ at the Emmy Awards, the most prestigious awards ceremony in the US broadcasting industry. ‘Arcane’, which has been recognized both in terms of box office and workmanship, is scheduled to return for season 2.

cyberpunk edge runner

Recently, the animation ‘Cyberpunk Edge Runner’ based on ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ by CD Project (CDPR) was released through Netflix and is gaining popularity in the global market. Hiroyuki Imaishi, who is famous for ‘Tengen Breakthrough Gurren Lagann’, was the overall drawing director for this work, and it consists of 10 episodes. Since its release on September 13th, the animation has attracted tremendous attention, recording 100% of Rotten Tomatoes expert ratings.

This work depicts the story of a protagonist who lives as a mercenary in a night city where body modifications are routine. The title of the animation, Edge Runner, is a title given to mercenaries who have achieved near impossible achievements in Night City. After the animation was released, word of mouth has spread among gamers who enjoyed ‘Cyberpunk 2077’, and even users who are enjoying it using a VPN (virtual private network) even though they can’t watch it in Korea yet.

Thanks to the popularity of these animations, the original game ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ is also running backwards on the ranking charts. The game 1.6 update Edge Runner released along with the animation showed synergy, and ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ ranked at the top of Steam sales, and the number of concurrent users who enjoyed the game exceeded 100,000. This is three to four times higher than the record in recent months.

The action game ‘Gwimuja’, which was very popular with the taste of slicing during the PlayStation 2 era, can also be seen in animation. Takashi Miike, who produced works such as ‘Laplace’s Witch’ and ‘As God Says’, and Shinya Sugai of the short animation ‘Zombie Factory’ have been appointed as animation general director. It will be available through Netflix.

Unlike the game, the anime ‘Gwimuja’ tells the story of a real person, Miyamoto Musashi, as the main character. Set in the beginning of the Edo period, when the Warring States period ended, it depicts the subjugation of Miyamoto Musashi, a demonic demon who borrowed the power of the oni.
