The Deadline website reports that it will be an anime-style prequel with the title set 250 years before the main trilogy.
Reportedly Philippa Boyens, Oscar-winning screenwriter for The Return of the King, will be consultant of the new project directed by the director Kenji Kamiyama whose credits include the anime series Ultraman by Netflix, several feature films in the series Ghost in the Shell e Cyborg 009 and also the announced animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Apparently Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are not involved in the project at the moment, but that could change along the way.

Older fans can’t help but remember the splendid and unfinished Lord of the Rings of Ralph Bakshi 1978, a memory that only raises expectations for this new New Line operation. The CCO Richard Brener said, jointly with the COO of the Warner Bros. Pictures group Carolyn Blackwood:
All of us at New Line feel a deep affinity with the extraordinary world that JRR Tolkien has created, and the opportunity to dive back into Middle-earth with the Warner Bros. Animation team is a dream come true. Fans know Helm’s Deep as the stage for one of the greatest battles ever filmed, and with many of the same creative visionaries involved and the brilliant Kenji Kamiyama at the helm, we couldn’t be more excited to offer a new insight into its story, which will allow audiences to experience the rich and complex Middle-earth saga in a new and exciting way.
